Calumet Services Ltd was appointed to undertake the design, procurement, installation and commissioning of the mechanical services for Phase 2 of Q3 Academy Langley, an extension to the existing academy complex providing additional purpose-built teaching and specialist education facilities. The project continued Calumet’s involvement at Q3 Academy Langley, having previously undertaken the mechanical services installation for the original Phase 1 development, completed in 2017.
The new teaching wing incorporated general classrooms, science laboratories, workshop facilities, music and art classrooms, new toilet facilities and associated circulation and ancillary spaces. Delivered on a design and build basis, the mechanical services design was developed and coordinated using Building Information Modelling (BIM). This played an important role in identifying and resolving potential clashes between services and the building structure, particularly within areas where restricted ceiling voids presented significant coordination challenges.
THE MECHANICAL SERVICES PACKAGE INCLUDED:
- New standalone Air Handling Unit (AHU) providing tempered fresh air to the new teaching accommodation.
- Complete ventilation and ductwork systems serving classrooms, teaching spaces, toilets and associated areas.
- Heat recovery ventilation systems serving the science laboratories and workshop facilities, integrated with Gas Guard safety systems and designed to meet the ventilation requirements of BB101.
- Modifications to the existing boiler room and heating infrastructure to accommodate the new extension.
- New heating distribution systems throughout the development, incorporating radiators controlled via pressure independent radiator valves.
- Complete domestic hot and cold water services, including Category 5 water protection serving the specialist science facilities.
- Plumbing and sanitaryware installations serving the new toilet and teaching facilities.
- Gas services serving the science laboratories, integrated with Gas Guard safety systems.
- Complete above-ground soil, waste and drainage systems.
- Comprehensive Building Management System (BMS) controls providing monitoring and control of the mechanical services.
- Full sprinkler installation throughout the new development.
- Thermal insulation to associated pipework, ductwork and mechanical services.
- Complete testing, commissioning and chlorination of the installed systems.
The project demonstrates Calumet Services’ ability to deliver a fully coordinated design and build mechanical services package within a live educational environment, successfully integrating new building services with existing infrastructure while meeting the specialist requirements of modern science, workshop and teaching facilities.
