Calumet Services Ltd was appointed to undertake the refurbishment of the hospital’s steam plantroom, providing essential upgrades to the existing steam generation and associated mechanical systems.

The plantroom provides steam to the hospital’s sterilisation facilities, requiring careful coordination to maintain continuity of this critical service throughout the works. Temporary steam boilers were utilised during the changeover period, allowing the permanent plant and associated services to be safely refurbished and replaced.

Calumet Services delivered a coordinated mechanical services package incorporating new steam boilers, refurbished pipework and upgrades to the associated gas, condensate and water services.

THE MECHANICAL SERVICES PACKAGE INCLUDED:

  • New steam byworth boiler installations serving the hospital sterilisation facilities.
  • Refurbishment and modification of associated welded pipework within the steam plantroom.
  • Provision and changeover arrangements incorporating temporary steam byworth boilers to maintain continuity of the hospital’s essential steam supply.
  • Natural gas works associated with the new steam byworth boiler installation.
  • Installation and refurbishment work to the associated steam condensate system.
  • Mains cold water services serving the steam plant and associated equipment.
  • Refurbishment of the existing blowdown vessel and associated connections.
  • Installation of the existing hot well storage tank and associated services.

The project demonstrates Calumet Services’ ability to undertake specialist mechanical steam plantroom refurbishment works within a live healthcare environment. The successful coordination of the temporary and permanent steam systems allowed essential sterilisation services to be maintained throughout the changeover, while the completed installation provided upgraded steam generation, gas, condensate and water services to support the hospital’s ongoing operational requirements.
